FfD4: Democratizing Finance

Reimagining Fiscal Systems for Democratic Resilience
July 01, 2025
2:30 pm – 4:00 pm CET

Online Event

Fiscal systems are not value-neutral. The way in which public resources are raised, allocated, and monitored reflects and shapes power relations in society. Many countries now have more closed, top-down approaches to public finance. In this event we co-organized with CIVICUS, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, we showed why inclusive and accountable public finance systems are key to sustainable development financing, showcased innovations in fiscal governance emerging from the Global South and explored collaboration opportunities between public finance groups, civil society and international actors to reinforce commitments made under the FfD4 outcome document. We reflected on global and national practices that integrate civic participation into fiscal decision-making and examined how such practices not only allow governments to make better use of resources but also reinforce public trust and democratic norms.
