Civil Society and Improved Governance in Developing Countries

This keynote address discusses the importance of governance in international development, arguing that good institutions support economic growth and vice versa. It then analyzes why institutional change can be so slow and difficult to implement in practice, and some of the dangers of focusing too much on governance reforms instead of other areas of development.
