New Zealand’s “Well-Being Budget”: A New Model for Managing Public Finances?

In December 2018, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern issued a call to New Zealand’s people and their leaders that the upcoming 2019 budget would attempt to align the country’s budget with a planning and policy approach built explicitly around indicators of critical components of social, economic, and environmental well-being and sustainability. This paper examines this approach and proposes how other countries might implement something similar.
